Meaning of Guru

GURU – The meaning for the divine Guru seems to surge up from the depth of the head, but the language fails to convert these celestial expressions into words, and speak out about the deep meaning of the word ‘Guru’.

The word Guru has been derived from two roots, ‘Gu’ and ‘Ru’. ‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘Ru’ means light. The one who dispels all darkness and takes you towards light is a ‘Guru’. The one who dispels the darkness of sensuous pleasures and pains (which are temporary and fleeting) and takes you to the light of eternal bliss (which is permanent and everlasting), is a ‘Guru’

Like the ‘Dawn’ that comes to dispel the darkness of night, allowing us to enjoy the light of the sun (which is self – illuminating), Guruji is the one who dispels the darkness of ignorance and shows you the path of light and eternal bliss.

God as the abstract Creator eludes our imagination, but when a human temple enshrines divinity we begin to understand through this familiar medium the purpose of our own ultimate destiny. Thus, when God assumes a human form, He establishes Himself as the Guru. Guru is manifested God – this is perhaps the most succinct and satisfying definition of the word. The life of the average seeker, as it is lived on the material and physical level, is barren and unproductive until it finds its focus in the Master. It requires the grace, protection and the powerful push of the Guru to release this imprisoned splendor which lies captive in each and every one of us.

Physical body is inherited from the father or a mother but Guru gives a Divine birth. That is, he transforms the disciple into a sublime personality. A person may lose his health and wealth. Friends and relatives may leave him. But a guru always remains with the disciple and protects him from all calamities.

In this world, which is full of construction walls of emotions, ego, anger, passion and greed all around? Do we feel proud of it ?

Alas! We forgot where we came from and what is our ultimate destination – i.e. salvation. Guruji guides you how to discipline and bring the five wild horses under control – ‘kaam’ (passion), ‘krodha’ (anger), lobh’ (greed), ‘moh’ (emotional attachment) and ‘ahankaar’ (ego) and helps you to take the chariot of your life in the right direction of inner peace and tranquility. Every man is bound by the cycles of birth and death. If we get rid of pride and prejudice and develop love and devotion to our guru, our attachment to mundane things will be cut off. Guru Kripa enlightens us to distinguish between good and evil and to select the right path for salvation and release from bondage. The lotus feet of our spiritual master are the only way by which we can attain pure devotional service. Guru is the ultimate manifestation of divinity and as such without him one cannot afford to get deliverance from the cycle of terrestrial turmoil’s..

Gurur Saakshat Paar Brahma. Tasmaye Shree Guruve Namah:

The literal meaning, as most people understand is qualifying the Guru as the Brahma the creator, as Vishnu, the protector and as Lord Shiva, the balancer

“Jai Gurudev” That’s the way we devotees greet each other at Seva Dham. Jai means “victory,” “Guru,” the remover of darkness,” and “dev,” the Divine, So, Jai Gurudev! is an invocation for the greatest victory that can be won—the triumph of the light ol knowledge over the darkness of ignorance by the grace of the Guru.
